a conversation between a friend and I
So he says to me, “I am of disgust at the very thought of your disliking my buttoned-up shirt.”
I replied, “Pal, no one’s going to drink your damned tea or your buttoned shirt.”
“Fine. Think of it that way as you may. But I am displeasured.”
This said Felix the Cat and I as we walked around a pond. He was carrying a green tea in a cup of his and he made these remarks. He had brought it along with him this afternoon in his company. We had scheduled this meeting by the pond to discuss our ideas to the yard sale we were planning for early autumn.
“How about we get signs and advertise in the local paper?” asked Felix.
“That is an appalling idea Felix.” I replied.
“Why do you think so?”
“Because no one is going to read any of these signs we could eventually post. They would throw them in the trash. And besides, they would have no idea where they would be directing. And everyone knows advertisements do no good.” I said.
“Do you really think so?” he asked again.
“Yes.”
We walked further along the pond in disquiet awkwardness. He drank the rest of his tea and tossed the cup aside.
I hesitated a few moments, then said to my friend, “Although it is a decent idea. Perhaps road signs and advertisements are a good idea…” I was embarrassed at thinking adversely to his original idea.
“Paco” he said to me, “What do you think of metaphysics?”
“I do not favor the idea.” I said.
Felix has always been certainly aware that I usually oppose everything he thinks of.
“But really. It is quite splendid. I have been recently lazing on my couch on sunny afternoons drinking Sunny-D and pondering the absolute nature of ultimate reality.”
“That is nonsense.” I replied. “Everyone knows Sunny-D is for rare occasions only.” And I thought it over further and realized I had caught only a glimpse of what he had said.
“Metaphysics? Have you made this up in your spare time?”
“No” blushed Felix. “I haven’t. It is real. It is a philosophy. Really, it’s a branch of Philosophy… for thinking and explaining the fundamental nature of being and the world. To what is “real”.”
I heard him for what he said. “I disapprove. And further more I am appalled that we’ve forgotten yet again to return our videos to Blockbuster. They will now cost fortunes in late fees!!”
We both got in his car. He looked through the high frequency FM radio on his car and decided instead to listen to a tape cassette he had in his glove compartment. Felix rambled on more with his Philosophies and theories that we collide with alternate dimensions mostly all the time, but we’re unable to usually notice since they’re dissolved with our other thoughts and differences of reality.
I sat back in the bucket seat of his car and was concerning myself with the thought of Sunny-D. Then as he drove away past the entrance of the car, I saw a lady selling peaches and oranges on the side of the road. And I thought to myself, “Metaphysics, huh…” And the nice girl selling fruits smiled at me with a twinkle in her eye.
